Sam Aburime - Silent Hill 2: The Movie

Silent Hill 2 Movie Poster

Project for Digital Illustration. Utilized all of the tools we've learned so far and included textures for more depth and effect.
This one was a lot of fun too! The Silent Hill series has some of my favorite games, so this was a treat. I also feel that I'm catching on quicker as I work; learned a lot with this one.

  1. I love the blood dripping in the background. It's very subtle, but still sets the tone for the movie. I also like that you chose a very simple color palette.

There's a lot of information in terms of text, and I think it's all placed very nicely. I like the chalky font you used for the title. I'd maybe center it just a little bit more. Other than that, it looks great!

  2. Haha, of course you would do Silent Hill. Oh my god, Sam. I really enjoy the emotion in the expressions. The characterization is great. The hierarchy in the imagery really works - I see James first and then Mary and Maria. However, the text sits really weirdly for this. It sits weirdly both spatially and in terms of color and it just doesn't work well for me. I think it needs to go somewhere else or be punched forward with contrast or both. Right now it is sort of awkwardly placed on top of James.

  3. This is so beautifully done. The layers in the face are well done, the textures in the faces and the background create a good balance, and I really like the brush thing you used for the letters. The pieces in the bottom corners look a bit awkward and rushed to me, I feel like the poster really doesn't need them, honestly. Great job!

  4. I think you did a really nice job with playing with sharp shadows/outlines to create forms. The very selective use of color helps tie the piece together as well (how the red of the background is tied down to the red of the bottommost text) You can tell it's a horror based movie, and the static-esque textures with the black and white coloring almost gives it an old-timey feel as well/old horror tv shows/etc

  5. Love the texture you used for the background and black with red color scheme definitely fits the horror genre. The composition is great very well balanced with the placement of characters and text. Your skill with creating very crisp shapes and blends of texture really shines in this one.The only thing that felt a bit off was the black shapes on the dudes shoulders they seemed a bit to round they could be clipped off to line up with the shape of his shoulders the left shoulder looks pretty good maybe just crop down the right a little more. Great job!

  6. I love what you're doing with the textures in the background and on the type- I think the scratchy type really helps get the creepy mood across. I think the way you've handled the illustrations of hte people is really nice as well - with the super contrasty lighting. That does a lot for the mood. Plus, you've handled the pen tool really well in their faces and hair. It looks fantastic. Great job on that! I think that it could be awesome if you wanted to add a little red back into their faces - just as an overlay? Or maybe a small shape here and there to give them a little life and pop them out of the background a little bit? Your type treatment looks really nice overall - the scale is great, and the focus is in the right place .I even like how youve handled the type at the bottom - maybe just move it up an inch or something from the edge so it's not too close, but other than that, it looks awesome. The only thing that I'm not super sure on is the diagonal shapes in the corner. maybe there is something else you can put there? Some kind of darkness? Maybe the bodies fade out in sort of a posterized treatment = like how you've done the rest of the ladies shoulder on the left? Great job on this, Sam. It looks like you've really got the hang of illustrator!
