Megan Leitschuh- Plague

^Original pencil sketch
^Added in texture image of some bricks and lowered its opacity.
^Started coloring with a low-opacity purple using the brush tool. My bottom sketch layer & purple layer was set to multiply-- this was how I gradually built up the purple.

^Added in some 'skin-esque' color to add more dimension in her face, mask, and clouds. Also used some texture brushes (on multiply) on the bricks and clouds to make it grungier.

  1. Nice use of very limited color. I like the drawing to begin with, it has a very interesting angle. The color really gives it a much heavier atmosphere than the drawing which is nice. Maybe you could get a bit darker in a few dark spots in general.

  2. The value in this drawing is amazing! It gives it such a wonderful dark deathly sense. I am really enjoying the small details you added through your process. Also I'm glad you used subtle tones, it really fits the mood.
I would almost want to see her hand a tiny bit closer to the mask, it would add just a little more suspense to it.

  3. I love how your final still has so much reference and so much of your origional draiwng in it. It's great that you scanned it in with so much shading. Your texture works great-it appeared to me that you drew that in yourself!

  4. Thanks for putting a lot of care into your black and white drawing. I really appreciate the detail in the value study you did (it really helped the final piece come together!) The emphasis you put on the piece in the darks and lights also helps set the mood really well. I think your concept is really strong and you can really tell what's going on with your drawing /story.

I think that you could potentially try to darken up some areas of the purple? Maybe there is an alternate, warmer purple that you bring in as well ( so it still stays really limited, but you could bring some variation into her skin tone, like warm purple under her eyes or in her fingertips? You're doing a great job with bringing in the yellow like that! Great job! Really nice darks in here!

  5. I like the mood and the detail you put into the original drawing. I think that the color doesn't add as much as it could, though; it could be used more strategically to communicate something -- like maybe instead of faint yellow tones here and there, one entire object could be a more vivid shade of yellow to call attention to it. That's just an example, but I think it would be interesting to look into the way that color can direct the eye around the composition rather than just filling it in.

  6. I like the way the complementary colors are playing off of each other to help add depth. You also did a good job at adding in some more subtle grungy texture to the sky and bricks.

  7. I really like how you were able to fully color the piece without losing anything from the original drawing, despite the amount of detail you put into it. I think your decision to have it mostly monochromatic was a really good one. It gives a lot to the mood of the piece. I also like the juxtaposition of the figure to the skull, which helps a lot with the plague theme. One I think could be improved on would be to have the detail on the bricks be a little sharper than it is now, though not as sharp as the figure or skull, to bring the piece together better. Overall, though, this drawing is very well done and I really like the attention to detail you put into it.
