Dad - Mason Sklar

FIRST GRUMPY DAD

GRUMPY DAD WITH COLOR

GRUMPY DAD WITH COLOR AND WHITE CIRCLE.

Dude.

I am super happy with this. I'm dumb and didn't do a lot of iterate saves. I'm not 100% on the composition and I don't think it works super well for the word "fat" but I'm a big fan of Painter now. I'll probably poke it around a little.
I haven't shown it to my dad yet...

  1. i really enjoy the line work and seeing the colors overlay each other and blend into each other. I really enjoy the lines and colors on his cheek and the white mixed with black lines in his hair. SHOW YOR DAD!

  2. I love this! I'm not getting fat so much, more of a sweaty feel. The materials you used look like oils, and there are moments of high contrast (around the eye, cheek, nose, etc) that make it feel sweaty. Really well rendered!

The composition is a little troublesome to me too...maybe adding brush strokes to blend the white and tan together to create a color field. Check out some Rothko!

  3. Your mark making really lands itself to give the illusion of flash. I dig it. It still has a cartoony feel though which I also like. It's kinda a weird mix of styles but I like the end product duder.

  4. This looks fantastic, especially the skin. You've got some great colors going on there.

  5. I really like the colors you used. Also the detailed line work in the hair and face as well as the moles or bumps or whatever they are called. Good job.

  6. Mason, this is really freaking nice dude. Great colors, excellent line work, and I like how you went back in for those shadow cores and highlights. My ONE beef dude, clean up the white oval, or kill it altogether. You spent so much time getting his face just right, and then that wabbly circle just kills it. Or throw it into photoshop and use the cut out tool to make it perfect.
    Otherwise, really strong piece.

  7. I really enjoy the textures you managed to create in this. I'm getting an earth element because of the colors... and I don't see fat, but maybe a little sweaty because of the color contrast? I think with the background you could have done some more fun texture painting.

  8. This is awesome. I really like the charcoal looking image a bunch, the light and shadow rendering is fantastic. I don't get fat, but it definitely has a dry earthy feel to it.

  9. I think to toned down color palette works really well to capture the Ire on your fathers face. I think that the circle could be altered a tad bit but I think that it works really well as a design element.

  10. I love the way that you're rendering his face! the wrinkles and the highlights work really well! I am so glad that you're working with the tonal aspects of the piece, too! You should feel really good about this piece! I think it would be cool for you to do something fun with the circle and then crop in? It feels like that's the only part that is unfinished - maybe some brush strokes? or a little bit of atmosphere?

I think you could also try to do an overlay with color, too - to see if you could tweak the grey-ness into a couple other colors! It would be cool for you to try that! Great job!
