Sam Aburime: Christmas Spirit - Kids

Basic outline of the assignment was that we were supposed to create to patterns that could be tiled (whether for fabric, wrapping paper, etc.) and fit some sort of theme.
The kids were a lot of fun to design for this one, and I was happy with the colors I picked out. I really liked the stripe design and couldn't chose between the two I made. I could see them both being used in different ways.

  1. I LOVE your icons and color palette! However, I don't think the coordinate with the brown stripes matches as well as the other one. It's a tad dark.

  2. i think the sortof "checkerboard" spacing of your character pairs is nice. it's easy to decipher, but the distribution of colors keeps my eye moving around and the negative spaces make things breathable. Perhaps you could make the snowflakes and/or the steam drift a little more across the edges the original tile grid, it might become a bit more organic and dynamic.

  3. Great color palette and set up of your Pantones - I think these look wonderful. I think it was a wise choice for you to consider a stripe for a coordinating pattern - I really like seeing it repeated out with the pantones beneath it - very professional presentation. Great job on this! I think the one that has the red background is my favorite, although I could definitely see you doing a version of a small white dot on brown for a second coordinate. I also think that your characters are all really handled well, too! The scenes are really fun and I especially like the scenes that have the kids looking at the magazine on the floor near the fireplcae. It gives you a little bit of a sense of where they are that I really like.

If I were to add anything /change anything, I think you might be able to add some more snowflakes in the big green wide open areas to help with hte spacing. I think it would help make it seem less on a grid and a little more tossed. I think it might also be nice to see some larger snowflakes thrown in there as a secondary icon!

This looks fantastic! I love the spacing , it looks really nice on the angle like that! Nice work. Really strong and obvious main pattern (christmas!) and really nice coordinate. These would make great wrapping papers.

  4. LOVE THIS! the color choices are awesome and i adore the characters! everything great! i think the spacing that you decided works very well, anything else would seem too busy. i love how simplistic you went with the other pattern. i like the first one you posted rather the darker pattern, the colors seem to work better i think.
    awesome job!

  6. These are incredibly adorable! I love the subdued green (as opposed to a normal christmas green). I think the complimentary patterns are a bit loud, though, which contrasts the quietness of the main pattern.

  7. I still think these are beyond adorable~ The only bit that looks a bit strange to be is the boys face in the scene where they're outside in the snow and the girl is throwing her hands up? Maybe it's the eyes or the mouth...? It's also possible it just looks a bit strange when it's small like that~ I'd love to see these scenes even bigger on the pattern, so people can get all that lovely detail you put into these. Perhaps if you spaced out the scenes a tad more so they had more breathing room? You might fill in the spaces with some snow shrapnel? Just a nit-picky idea. Your color choices are really nice- and I really like how you pulled out the warm colors for your secondary patterns. I think I do like the first coordinate rather than the second though- the black feels too heavy to me. All in all, amazing work lady!

  8. I think the colors you used are awesome. Defiantly gives the holiday feeling. I would have to choose the red coordinate pattern over the two seems to fit the theme better. The spacing is well planned out. The characters are amazing and each icon feels like it tells a story great work.
